FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The University of Rhode Island rifle team made the trip from South Kingstown to Fort Wayne, Indiana to compete at the 2025 Intercollegiate Rifle Club National Championship tournament sponsored by the American Smallbore Shooting Association, where they finished in third place overall.
The Rams brought four individuals to compete against top collegiate club-level programs from around the country in both smallbore and air rifle at the two-day event, which was held at The X Count range facility.
Day one marked the smallbore competition in which Sophia Wood led the Rams with a score of 562 to take eighth place in the 49-athlete field. Close behind Wood was Alex Travison firing a score of 558, good for an 11th place finish. Rounding out the Rams' scoring team were Emily Lopez (545) and Carolyn Lussier (523). As a team, the Rams combined for a score of 2188 to earn bronze in the event behind runner-up University of Michigan Rifle Team (2232) and the University of Akron's Zips Rifle Club who fired a 2244 to earn the title.
Air rifle was contested on day two, with Travison firing the high score for the Rams at 564 to place 16th individually out of 52. Wood followed close behind to earn 17th via X-count tiebreaker (563-31x). Lopez (556) and Lussier (544) rounded out the remainder of the scoring team. Their team score of 2226 was good for fifth place in the seven-team field, narrowly missing fourth behind North Dakota State University's 2228.
The Rams' combined aggregate of 4414 earned them third place at the conclusion of the weekend behind University of Michigan (4525) and overall champion Zips Rifle Club (4538).
Also awarded at the Championship were the 2025 All-Star teams for smallbore, air rifle, and aggregate. Two Rhody Rifle athletes combined for three total honors. Sophia Wood earned First Team recognition for smallbore and Second Team while Alex Travison was named to the Second Team for smallbore.
